One of the best things about being a writer is that you often get to meet like minded people. My UFC preview pieces take a significant amount of time and I blew the time I had this week in slavishly promoting a Cincinnati fighter, Matt Brown.
However, fellow writer Chris Genachte published an in depth UFC 189 preview for the main event and graciously allowed me to use it.
“It’s tomorrow. The 11th of July – or the 12th for the Europeans is the date MMA fans around the world are waiting for. Las Vegas is currently holding the International Fight Week and it ends with one of the most prestigious event of the year. This event’s main event is one of the most anticipated, even if it’s been changed last minute: Chad Mendes stepped in for injured José Aldo Jr to face Conor McGregor for the featherweight interim belt.
Finally. Finally Conor McGregor faces a wrestler. Since he’s in the UFC, he only faced other strikers (and one grappler) and he proved he was way better than any other strikers in the division; 67 seconds to knock Marcus Brimage out, a decisive decision against Max Holloway – who is now on a 6-fights winning streak – 4 minutes against Diego Brandao, less than 2 to take care of Dustin Poirier and finally, 7 minutes to take Dennis Siver out. One can say all he wants, the Irish is good, very good. But he’s never faced a wrestler and there’s nobody better than Chad Mendes to test him.”
