This year’s annual WWE SummerSlam event will be taking place this Sunday, August, 23rd at the Barclay’s Center in New York. This event is going to be a huge four hour show and there is going to be tons of matches. Jon Stewart will be this year’s guest host for the show. Below are the matches for the event with my personal input.
Ryback (c) vs The Miz vs Big Show for the WWE Intercontinental Championship
Ryback is the favorite to retain here. I also think he will retain although I don’t really care for him as I.C. Champ. I would much rather Miz had the title as Miz can further a feud with any other midcarder such as Neville, Barrett etc…and help push the title much better than Ryback can. Big Show is just the filler in this match, almost like the third wheel, but Big Show can be impressive at times so there’s that.
Fatal Four Way for the WWE Tag Team Championship: New Day vs Los Matadores vs Lucha Dragons vs Primetime Players ©
When they first tried to force the New Day on us I hated it. But the more awful and bi-polar the gimmick became the more I started to fall in love with it(I know makes no sense but I’ve always like bad gimmicks). I really am hoping they walk away with the titles just to add more fuel to the fire because the heat they attract is glorious. Even if they don’t and the Primetime Players retain I’m ok with that. The other two teams in this match are just to add that chaotic element of high spots into the match so it should be very entertaining. Kind of excited for this match from an in ring standpoint.
Three Team Divas Elimination Match: Team PCB (Paige, Charlotte and Becky) vs Team BAD (Naomi, Sasha Banks, and Tamina) vs Team Bella (Nikki Bella, Brie Bella and Alicia Fox)
Oh this match…This is most likely going to be a booking nightmare. First off, it would’ve been better as a Survivor Series style elimination match but it’s not. If one member is eliminated the whole team is eliminated so that kind of kills a lot of drama and storytelling. With the event being so long you already know this match is going to get more time than it should so the dramatic element of the Survivor Series style match would’ve helped keep our attention. I’m expecting Team Bad to win this match by out heeling the heels of Team Bella to steal a win.
Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns vs the Wyatt Family
I tune in to WWE every week and no matter how bad the shows can get at times, Bray Wyatt is always my bright spot. This feud has been awful as i’ve stated on numerous occasions and not even Wyatt’s story telling can save it. This match is 2 years late and missing two members of the original feud to begin with (Although, I can’t wait for Rowan to return). I expect the faces to win here, but I digress.
Rusev with Summer Rae vs Dolph Ziggler with Lana
I’m so glad this feud is finally resuming so it can end. Rusev needs something fresh and to move on from this Lana nonsense. Rusev has been given the same path as Umaga and I don’t like it. Build up the monster, let Cena beat the monster, then start placing that monster into ridiculous feuds. Rusev and Ziggler can have great matches together. But it just isn’t believable that a monster like Rusev who has been running through the likes of Mark Henry recently would ever be threatened by a guy Ziggler’s size. But regardless of this booking, the match itself will probably be very entertaining. Plus there’s Lana and that’s always worth the tv time.
Stephen Amell and Neville vs Stardust and “Cosmic” King Barrett
Obviously the faces are going to win here but who cares? This should be entertaining. Amell has athletic ability so its going to be fun to see what exactly they have been working on with him for this match. Expect a Red Arrow from Neville and the Green Arrow to pick up the pinfall.
Randy Orton vs Sheamus
Everyone hates Sheamus…Sheamus is one of my favorites on the entire roster when he’s a heel though. This match will be solid. Both men are tremendous workers. I’m interested to see the RKO that Orton hits for the win though.
Kevin Owens vs Cesaro
This will be the best match on the show for me. Two of my personal top 5 favorite in ring workers in the business right now so I’m already hyped for this match. It is also a match where I personally don’t care who wins or loses because I love both talents so much. I do think Cesaro gets the win though, he’s been skyrocketing thanks to the fan support he’s been getting lately and it is well over due. This match has the potential to be match of the year from a technical standpoint. Although it is going to be very tough to top the first two Owens-Cena matches from earlier this year.
Champion vs Champion Match for the United States and World Heavyweight Championship: John Cena (U.S. Champion) vs Seth Rollins (WWE HW Champion)
Love him or hate him Cena is THE man. And like Ric Flair used to say “To be the man, you gotta beat ‘the Man’”. And I don’t think Rollins will beat Cena clean. Cena will not walk out as champion and that’s almost obvious but what will cost him the match? Triple H? Rollins and his heel tactics? or Ric Flair(Which is something nobody has really considered). I think it would be incredible to see Ric Flair cost Cena the title, but I don’t think the WWE will do something that heelish with “the Nature Boy” but it would be a nice swerve. This match will be fantastic though because even though Rollins gets a lot of heat(he’s suppose to get heat) he is one of the best heels in WWE and a fantastic heel champion as well as in ring performer so this match won’t disappoint. I would love for Sheamus to cash in here also and walk away with both titles for himself.
Undertaker vs Brock Lesnar
I never wanted to see Undertaker wrestle again after the Streak was broken. Then he returned and I just couldn’t be mad about it. Then he beat Bray Wyatt at Wrestlemania (Which I still think Wyatt should’ve won). Now he’s back again to finish this year and a half Lesnar feud and they’ve been pushing it hard. I love the Undertaker, but I don’t care to see him win here and I don’t care for this feud. The Streak was broken at Wrestlemania. Wrestlemania is the WWE’s Super Bowl, to bill this match as “too big for Wrestlemania” makes no damn sense to me, NOTHING is bigger than your biggest event. PERIOD. Anyway, what does it matter if Undertaker wins? He would’ve finally beaten Lesnar for the first time in his career. And? The Streak is over. That is all that mattered anymore in terms of the Undertaker. Many people want to see Sting get involved in this match, I don’t want to see that either. I never understood that match concept other than Sting painted himself up like the Crow. The perfect ending to this would be the return of a masked Kane hell bent on finally putting down the Undertaker who has always been better than him. This match is one I honestly can’t predict though and I am excited that there is that element of surprise for this one.
